Morning walk before screens
Cadence:daily
The rule is the rule: twenty minutes outside, no phone, no podcast, before the work day starts. I started this in March and have kept it most days since.
It is not a workout. I am not trying to hit a step count. The point is to put some quiet between waking and the first thing that wants my attention. By the time I get back to the desk my head is on my own shoulders instead of already mid-thread on someone else’s.
The first two weeks I cheated constantly. I’d tuck the phone in my pocket “just in case” and end up checking it by the third block. Removing the phone entirely fixed that. Now the only thing in my pocket is a key and a folded receipt I forgot to throw away.
What I noticed: the walk is most useful on the days I don’t feel like doing it. The days I drag myself out the door are the days I come back most useful. On the days I feel great and “want to get going” — those are often the days I lose the morning to a small, reactive panic by 10 a.m.
I am not going to tell you it changed my life. I will say: I have stopped opening my laptop before I open the front door, and that small act has saved me from the worst version of myself on most days. That is enough to keep doing it.
